Who Qualifies?
The VA may pay a burial allowance if the veteran:
- ✓ Was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
- ✓ Was receiving VA pension or compensation at time of death
- ✓ Died in a VA facility
- ✓ Died while traveling at VA expense
- ✓ Died while receiving VA care in a community nursing home
How to Apply
-
Gather the required documents
You'll need: DD-214 or other proof of military service, the veteran's death certificate, paid funeral receipts, and any cemetery or burial receipts.
-
Submit VA Form 21P-530EZ
Complete the Application for Burial Benefits form. You can submit online at VA.gov, by mail, or in person at your regional VA office.
-
File within 2 years of burial
The claim must be filed within 2 years of the veteran's burial or cremation. Don't delay — this deadline is strict.
-
Receive payment
If approved, the VA issues payment to whoever paid the burial expenses — typically the funeral home or the family.
Remember: This Covers Only a Fraction
The maximum burial allowance of $2,000 leaves a $5,000–$10,000+ gap for the average funeral. Pre-planning with a preneed policy is the only way to guarantee your family isn't left with that burden.
